How To Make Your Home More Appropriate and Comfortable For Seniors

If you are looking for simple ways to ensure that your home is appropriate and comfortable for seniors, simply continue reading.

How to make your home more appropriate and comfortable for seniors:

1. Place a few well-located handrails around your home

One of the easiest ways to ensure that seniors can easily navigate your home is to place handy rails around your home. Which seniors can use to hold onto and balance if they find walking tricky. As a bonus, if you place handrails next to your stairs and in your bathroom, your senior is far less likely to experience a dangerous fall. You may also want to install a stairlift as this would help prevent falls altogether when moving from one floor to the next.

You may even want to consider placing a grippy handrail in your shower, to prevent your senior slipping in your shower.

2. Raise the level of your senior’s favorite chair

As sitting up and sitting down can be tricky for seniors, you may want to place small wooden blocks underneath your senior’s favorite sofa or chair, to make sitting down and standing up a little easier for seniors. You can even purchase lifts for your chairs that feature a rubbery texture that will ensure that your chair doesn’t move around on your wooden blocks.

3. Make sure to place a shower chair in your shower

As seniors can often find it difficult to stand for prolonged periods of time, you may want to consider purchasing a shower chair for your senior to sit down on, in the shower.

4. If possible, give your senior the closest possible bedroom to a bathroom

As seniors often have weak bladders and issues with incontinence, it’s a great idea to offer your senior a bedroom which is located as close as possible to a bathroom. As an example, if you have a bedroom which boasts a private en-suite, you may want to consider moving your senior into this room.

5. Place a comfortable chair in your garden

If your home boasts a garden, it’s a nice idea to place a comfortable outdoor chair in your garden. So that your senior will be able to enjoy sunshine, fresh air, and a pleasant environment on warm, sunny days.

6. Place clocks which large numbers around your home

Another way to make your home a nicer place for seniors is to swap out your home’s clocks for clocks which feature extra large numbers. Which will be far easier for your senior to read. While you may not look at your clocks to tell the time as you may simply check your smartphone for the time, most seniors don’t rely on smartphones as much as younger individuals do.

7. Place night lights in your home’s hallways

To make it easier for your senior to navigate your home at night and to be able to safely find your home’s light switches, it’s a great idea to place night lights in your home’s hallways. As well as in your senior’s bedroom and bathroom.

If you use the 7 tips listed above in order to make your home more comfortable for seniors, you should notice that your senior will find everyday life, in your home, a little bit easier.
